As the founder of Unity in Austin, Texas, and cofounder of PHP Agency, I’m happy to share our story. Over the last twenty years, we’ve licensed over 12,000 agents and helped almost 100,000 clients. Our goal is to build the best agency in the insurance industry, with over 100,000 agents and 500 offices across the country. We work hard to be the best in PHP Agency and Integrity.

Today, I want to share 13 crucial mistakes I made when I started my business journey. This video is a follow-up to a training I did after being in business for 13 years. Now, 19 years in, I have more insights and more mistakes to share. Let's dive in: 1. Overestimating Ability, Underestimating Commitment I thought I had the skills and mindset but didn't realize the commitment needed. Les Brown's quote resonates: “Either you’re committed to mediocrity or to greatness.” 2. Allowing Quitting to Be an Option Doubts and flirting with quitting slow you down. Lance Armstrong said, “The struggle is temporary, but quitting lasts forever.” 3. Procrastinating in Learning the Business I wasn’t urgent or aggressive enough in mastering systems. Benjamin Franklin said, “You may delay, but time will not.” 4. Letting My Ego Get in the Way Ego caused frustration and impatience. Rig Veda states, “Ego is the biggest enemy of humans.” 5. Emotional Ups and Downs Naivety in handling entrepreneurship's emotional rollercoaster. Unknown quote: “Don’t make a permanent decision for your temporary emotion.” 6. Getting Comfortable with Small Successes Small victories led to complacency. Remember, “Everything exists in cycles; nothing is permanent.” 7. Not Closing the Door to Other Opportunities Distracted by other options. Tom Kite’s quote: “You can always find a distraction if you’re looking for one.” 8. Losing My Fire Leadership fatigue set in. Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” 9. Neglecting My Faith Faith shapes outlook. A quote I love: “God never gives you a dream that matches your budget; He’s checking your faith.” 10. Forgetting to Empty My Cup Stopped being a student. Bruce Lee: “Empty your cup so that it may be filled.” 11. Being Too Soft on Myself During Good Times, Too Hard During Bad Times Opposite reactions in different times. Remember, “You will never speak to anyone more than you speak to yourself in your head, so be kind to yourself.” 12. Struggling with Belief Doubting my abilities. “Believe where others doubt, work where others refuse, stay where others quit, and you will win where others lose.” 13. Trying to Be Everyone Else But Myself Comparing myself to others.
